Evaluation Question 1

Powered by emaze Audience

Correlating to Blumler and Katz's Uses and gratification theory i feel this was the most influential part of planning and research relating to my video, relating to all 4 distinctions relating to the audience through all different forms surrounding the video. Personally i think the main distinction relating to my video is surveillance; due to the video's ideology being so strongly related to the video and song lyrics, this creates a sense of a moral panic provoking the audience's thoughts about the deeper thoughts and messages once looked at without the rose tinted glasses. The sense of moral panic comes especially in the song ‘uprising’ with its powerful messages and ideologies towards the government it has a strong sense of surveillance. We watch the news as we feel it is a reliable source of information and it makes us feel secure that we know what is happening around us. Bellamy, the lead singer explained this: “The lead single, ‘Uprising’, was kind of inspired by the G20 protests which took place last year”. If this is true, it is consistent with my interpretation of the lyrics, namely that "they" represents large corporations and the government. Unfortunately we live in a business and government run society in the wrong way; they control the media along with more and more aspects of people's lives all the time. The term for this culture is called neoliberalism. That is the basic background of this song. Muse clearly wants to put out this message and they act as advisors and almost like seminar givers who preach about powerful messages about life. Through the ideologies of the song you understand that the macro purpose of this song is to inform and educate the audience on the truth about how our society is run. Therefore at the same time the micro purpose being to advise the mass audience on how to deal and solve this problem. To summarize this up, this model is all about making the consumers aware of what is happening around us, therefore Muse informing people about what is happening all round us in relation to the government and the G20 protests which inspired the song helps the song and video conform to this theory. This also inspired my video and ancillary texts, in my video you see what's happening all around you and how you feel you are on a journey with the protagonist; relating to the surveillance distinction as you realise you could be under control at some point in your life and realising that securing yourself from this control is the best option. However my video reflects the messages but in a different form, the doctors with the pills resembling the government and their lies relating to the hypodermic needle theory as through the understanding of the hidden messages and attitudes of the video is like an injection of information being fed to the audience . Therefore relating back to the Surveillance distinction, because once the audience consume this information injection, the reaction is to secure yourself.

Genre

According to Jason Mittell (2001) genre surpasses the boundaries of media texts and that genres are cultural categories and operate within industry, audience and cultural practices as well, in brief industries use genre to sell products to audiences. Media producers use familiar codes and conventions that often make cultural references to their audience's knowledge of society and other texts. My video consistently challenges this convention as for many consumers including me relating back to Stuart Hall's Reception theory, i specifically targeted my products at people coming under the dominant view including: younger people, women and lower class people, simply to give them a voice as they are stereotypically the most belittled and seen as inferior groups of people. Rock and punk music for example Hurry up Harry - frequently categorised as having a progressive views across the entire political spectrum, therefore challenging conventions as my products are aimed at a group of people who will have a dominant view because the negative semantic field of politics is predominantly used by the inferior groups. Reflected by the protagonist is a semiotic to be used as the voice for the groups with a dominant view. Therefore i feel as if when the dominant viewers watch my video they can understand this on a wider scale and understand the semiotics and connotations a lot more deeper than for example an upper class consumer would. An upper class consumer would have an oppositional view because of the ideology that this is a song opposing the government, when upper class people benefit more from the government therefore cannot relate or see what consumers with a dominant view see.

Representation

Tessa Perkins' stereotype theory is both conformed to and also challenged, being divided by performance and narrative clips. Stereotypes are generally used more in pop and RNB music, as they are easy genres to generalise and stereotype, however rock music and artists are more individual, and its more acceptable to challenge conventions and not fit a stereotype and not getting judged purely for aesthetic reasons. However within my performance clip you predominantly see the band in dark colours which have meaningful connotations of death, mystery, dark and fairly hollow, which represent how meaningful rock music actually is. Stereotypically rock artists are seen as unconventional, however my artists are seen as overriding yet relaxed and chilled. They don’t conform to the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll but conforms in the freedom and rebellion sense. However fit a stereotype to be part of the rock/ indie music artist genre due to their costume in the products. Completely ignoring Laura Mulvey's Male gaze theory i challenged it to turn it on it's head to conform to it. In my video there are no female influence's as she argued that women in video's are there to be used as sexual objects by the way they are used, dressed and treated. However relating back to the Reception theory I included women in the target audience as I feel they are part of an inferior group in society therefore by using male influences to create the voice for the inferior groups of society. I felt the use of women to sexualise them to get my ideology and messages conveyed to the consumers was unnecessary but at the same indicating equality and that you don't need to be a feminist to stand up for equal gender rights.

Narrative

My initial idea of the narrative, was a mental patient confined in this institution, representing the inferior groups of society - who is under the control of the doctors representing the powers/ superstructure, who are poorly treating the patients and exploit and abuse their power and suddenly they find a voice and a way out. My narrative however isn't just as simple as that, because it completely shatters this theory of a linearity and chronological order of Todorov's theory within the narrative.I felt the mixture and breaking down of the narrative helped to understand the narrative in a more understanding way due to mixing up the narrative it allows the consumer to see the change and contrast between different paths however conforming to the theory by seeing the change and progression by breaking the conventions and chronology. My narrative is very confusing between time and space possibly indicating that it is a postmodern text. I wanted to tell a specific story that, which was quite simply that one shouldn't be under so much control it will only lead to unity and strength in numbers. I feel this made my video more relatable to the inferior groups who can see my video in a wider understanding, as they were my intentions, which is almost a hybrid of Andrew Goodwin's theory in 1992 stating that modern audiences create their individual meaning based on their understanding of experiences and culture. Foregrounding that the dominant viewers will create their understanding of it based on their life experiences and how they fall in society, allowing meanings to be created because of deeper understanding of thoughts and ideologies. On the other hand I followed Sven Carlsson's theory of music videos. If the video is predominantly understood as a short film whilst the music is playing, it is generally a narrative clip, including a visual story that can be interpreted by the audience in many ways, which involves no relation to music whatsoever. The divide in my video is approximately a 50/50 split as you see the band playing in the woodland introducing the performance side of it. I used the band performing as they act as the story tellers of this narrative, indicating this is a surreal and fictional world almost acting as a morality story.

Magazine Advert

As you can see with my Ancillary text 2, which is a magazine advert, i decided to conform to the conventions of a magazine advert, because i wanted my product to look individual but giving it a professional and realistic look. Specific features i labelled and explained why they are there as you can see above.
As you can see i decided to conform to the conventions as challenging them would make my product look a bit all over the place and wouldn't get the full benefits from it, for example by using the large font for the band name draws the attention to the advert, as it is aesthetically pleasing for the audience. However i challenged one or two conventions, the first one being not putting any track names on the advert, simply because i feel like the audience should have to consume the music and listen to the full album and not teasing the audience with a couple of tracks, as they should all be equally as good. The second one being not including a predominant image of the full band opposed to just being a predominant image of the singer with the other members faded in the background. I chose to do this as i feel the emotions on the singers face can tell a lot of stories and reflects the journey in my music video and on my digipak. Possibly another convention challenger is that the album name is down the side and vertical rather than horizontal, i did this as i felt to adapt to the image that was the correct format in which to place it.

Digipak

Lyrics and Imagery

I strongly believe in the images and shots correlating to the lyrics, because how else are you going to understand it on a deeper, more intellectual form. For example one of the main semiotics relating to imagery, is when the lyrics 'we will be victorious' was sung i got the few patients to do that part together and as it was later in the song it reflected the journey they have all come on and now at this point they had to unify and become one. During planning and research i analysed a lyric analysis, understanding every line of the song and this helped me plan my storyboard and content of the narrative, which had to reflect the initial ideologies of the song.
Another vital lyric and imagery link was the same lyric, however it was when the patient broke free of the straps and out of the bed. This connotes the optimism and true determination it takes to fight against some form of superstructure or powers who are on top of you. It also links in to Todorov's stage 3 disruption of an equilibrium, adding chronology and structure to the video. However it also re-establishes the narrative clip of the video as it introduces a section almost action like, which is conventional of a high intensity, fast paced narrative clip.
One more link that i found fairly interesting was the blank screen as the patients have just collapsed as the lyrics 'we should never be afraid to die' connoting a blank piece of time and space. Thus indicating that nothing ever dies, it just simply means that you get back up and start fresh and start living again, which is why the patients are seen as so determined and charismatic throughout the intense sector of the video. I slowed that part down to show that there is no rush to die, but also no rush to start living again and that you should start living when you want, not under anyone's control.

Conclusion

In conclusion I feel like I have constructed three media texts that are both conventional and convention challenging at the same time. I chose to challenge these conventions for pragmatic reasons, but i felt it was necessary to challenge conventions to fit the genre and reflect the ideologies and emotions being conveyed in the song.

Evaluation question 2

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

When creating my products throughout my coursework project, i aimed to maintain the same house style which all conveyed the same ideologies, however allowing them open to interpretations, therefore complimenting each other with the same messages and beliefs. I did this as i felt they are intended to be part of one promotional package, therefore they should all convey the same meanings without either of them looking absurd or odd.

When i was conducting ancillary text and music video research, i noticed that the whole aesthetics and style fit to their genre and remained very similar throughout all texts. However this is a convention i tried to challenge, but using the idea I've challenge it to remain continuity. My products looked edgy, imperfect and kind of all over the place in terms of my digipak and magazine advert. On the other hand i used the aesthetic style and manipulated it into its own little story, therefore when the audience consumes it you have to understand all 3 products to then realise it is one story that has come together through the ideologies and connotations in every detail surrounding each feature. However next time if i was to do this and improve my aesthetic style, i'd get more images relating more to the initial ideology of the song, being about the truth, tyranny and control. For example i used a picture of an ambulance to connote the hospital as to where my patient is. However i used the pictures of my band in the same costume, as i wanted the indie rock aesthetic style for them as they suit the specific genre,  initially i thought they'd have been but the images used conformed to my specific genre and aesthetic style. I wanted a fairly young aesthetic style, relating back to Hall's reception theory the dominant viewers are young people, therefore they can instantly relate to whats going on in the video, because they can see themselves as the character and linking back to the surveillance distinction of the uses of gratification theory they can then secure themselves after understanding the aesthetics, due to relation to experiences under tyranny.

Conclusion
In conclusion i feel like i have created three products that build up a strong combination in order to form one function and that is to promote them all for one purpose. Whilst maybe i could have made my ancillary texts more conventional as some consumers may not think that they combine together and unify to create the most appealing and well linked products, however they was not the only factors i thought about when creating them. My main aim was to create this prolonged morality story that is being 'told' within the hidden semiotics and ideologies, which also acts as an extended metaphor in English language. The unconventional idea i was going for in fact worked quite the opposite  in creating a successful combination and allowing the target audience to engage on a deeper level and not just the aesthetic style, but in fact looking deeper into every individual detail

Evaluation question 3

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

During the coursework progress, i was constantly asking friends and family what they liked and thought wasn't so good about my product to make it what the final product is now. I felt feedback was the best way to make sure i can produce a top quality product, it is crucial that during this project that i got feedback as it allows me to develop and make vital changes where they was needed.

This is a survey i conducted back in march just after i finished my final products, i gave out my survey to a mixture of people of different ages, genders, social classes, backgrounds and many more factors that could influence their interpretations of the questions. I gave it out to 40 people and after a lot of stressing i got their responses back and it helped massively due to the fact once i got results back it helped me improve things if they specified and also helped me gain an understanding of how different people reacted to my products and how they understood the ideologies, all suitable to my specific target audience.
Each bar Create your own user feedback survey / sector represents a percentage just to clear up for any queries about the results!
Question 1 - What is the first semantic field you think about when you think about the rock genre?
On the first question i simply wanted to know what people thought when the rock genre was brought to mind to help me who i should market my product to. As you can see 10% voted the stereotypical 'Sex drugs rock n roll' lifestyle, 50% voted the morality songs, 30% voted the songs with underlying meanings emphasising ideologies and 20% voted other and the specification all involved ideologies of just being known for producing good music. For the first answer it shows the progression of stereotypes, linking back to Perkins' theory has somehow dissolved rapidly in relation to rock music in the 60s and 70s as that stereotype was the norm'. Therefore rock songs are surrounded by positive connotations due to the expiry of that stereotype. 70% combined voted for the morality and meanings of songs, i found in modern rock songs, they come away from a nostalgic stereotype of rock songs and artists as they don't need to focus on their persona. Meanings and morals in songs allows my target market to understand what the songs are all about therefore progressing on to understanding the band and their ideologies, further developing their fanbase and consumers. Morals and meanings will be more beneficial to younger people, the bulk of my target audience as you need them from a young age to develop them as you age, therefore a fresh head is perfect to understand and build on their current morals.

Do you generally listen to music from the rock genre?

As you can see with this one, it was a yes/ no question and the red sector represents the amount of people who said yes (80%) and the green clearly representing the people who said no (20%). I found that the 20% who said no was the youngest respondents, being between 14-16 females. Stereotypically younger girls are brought up around this pop music lifestyle and it is almost a convention that they can't break, pop artists such as Justin Bieber etc. was introduced when he was just a teen therefore younger teens, especially girls can relate to him as young girls at the time when he was first introduced found him aesthetically pleasing as he related to their age category. Thus indicating that young teens are too young to understand the ideologies and messages being hidden to create an intellectual puzzle to that then you can relate to. The other 80% was built up of young adults/ students (18-24), working class people and adult females. This correlates to my original target audience, as i feel that they can understand the powerful ideologies and relate to them in a way as if they put their  scenarios to the ideologies.

If no, what is your favourite genre?

The results stand at 30% for pop, 20% for RNB, 5% for jazz, 35% for rap and 10% for other. This wasn't too relevant to my audience feedback but more over interest as to what these genres have that people don't see in the rock genre. To me personally i don't see any of these genres with a dominant reading as i don't feel like they portray emotions, ideologies, messages and beliefs in the way rock music does, therefore i struggle to understand what the music is about. However it helped me gain knowledge on my respondents, which may influence their questions by their understanding of their own music taste in reflection to others' who accept rock music fully. It wasn't completely irrelevant it helped me understand the respondents background and having such a wider range symbolised that i have a diverse group of clients and i needed to realise that when producing my product therefore it doesn't limit the consumers.

What is the first thing you associate rock music with?

I left this question completely open, no right or wrong answer and i wasn't looking for any specific answer and i got completely different answers for every client. This is more of a development on question 1, as i gave an option for that question, but i wanted to understand fully how they feel about rock music and whether or not they feel they can relate to it. The variety of answers reflected the diversity of people i took to get feedback off, this meant that in order to make the best products i had to spread my products to cover a wide spectrum, however i didn't initially intend that, in case some people oppose or completely reject the reading and just simply not getting what i am trying to put across. However having to choose and specify a target market, has a disadvantage as that limits the circulation and consumers, as much as I'd like everyone to consume my product, that is just being unrealistic, because not everyone consumes the same genre of music, which is what makes a person individual or acceptable.

What is the way you predominantly listen/ watch your music/ videos?

The results are as follow: Youtube 20%, iTunes 30%, Illegally downloading 40%, CDs 10%, these results really influenced in how i marketed my product and how i priced it relation to demographics. In relation to youtube, that is lower than expected as it is a free way of consuming both music and videos and due to digitalisation and web 2.0, it makes it more accessible to consume products and can be consumed just about anywhere and any time. Also it has just about everything you would want to consume covering the full spectrum of products. Due to the rise of modern technology, especially apple products, iTunes was the 2nd most popular way to consume music as you notice around and about just about everyone has an iPhone. In 2013 alone Apple sold 33.8 million iPhones, 14.1 million iPads and 4.6 million macs, the numbers are staggering and that just reflects the amount of people that have access to iTunes. If i sold my product on iTunes it would have a high chance of being consumed by a wide array of people, therefore promoting my artist on a wider scale. The highest statistic was the illegally downloading sector being 40%, this shows the amount of people who don't understand the institutions are losing out on money when they've made a product for them to be consumed. However this allows me to understand that not everyone is in the financial state to be wasting money on products when you can get them for free. Therefore this helped me re-evaluate the price of my product as i don't want it to be seen as too expensive so that consumers will go and illegally download it. Finally the last and lowest statistic being CDs and records being only 10%. However i can see the reasoning being that these forms aren't as accessible as the rest of the digitalised forms. On the other hand,  some consumers enjoy the hands on, hard copy experience which could in a sense attract more consumers.

Did you enjoy my music video?

Results are as following: Yes 70%, No 20%, unsure 10%. As we gathered from earlier's information, 20% of the respondents didn't like, identified to be girls between 14-16. Therefore my video being an intellectual puzzle and a prolonged story that you have to accept all three media texts to fully understand what the ideology is individual to that specific detail, which then collate and create one dominant ideology made up of all these individual ones. The results are simple, the target market just isn't fit for girls aged between 14-16 as they are stereotypically not mature enough to take on morals, understandings and ideologies, therefore will just get confused with time and space and how they build up these media texts.

Do you think it fit my specific genre?

The answers are the exactly same as last time, in order to fully understand the genre, you have to be aware of the conventions of the genre that builds up a rock artist and their ideologies creating a brand for them. Results are as following: Yes 70%, No 20%, unsure 10%. As we gathered from earlier's information, 20% of the respondents didn't like, identified to be girls between 14-16.  I found that the 20% who said no was the youngest respondents, being between 14-16 females. I found that my products were edgy,  not as refined, however i think that pretty much defines rock music as a collective genre. They don't have to be a set of rules or conventions telling you how to be a rock artist, you just go and do it, it is a genre of freedom. I think that marketing my product to younger people with a fresh head, that are open to interpretations - women who are aware or have experienced the inequality of society, opening their minds and working class people who can relate to negative ideologies due to finances, social class and the hierachy system are my perfect dominant viewers.

I asked my friends on facebook and also in a group chat with 5 friends, to give me feedback on what they think of my ancillary texts and my final video. This helped for if i did this project again how i would be able to do better than the previous attempt. Doing this allowed me just to see how other people not specific to target market thought of my product and how they interpreted it
I asked my 78 year old Grandad about what he thought about my video, although he wasn't part of the target market i felt gaining opinions from a wide range of people was necessary just to see the diversity and varied opinions i got. My grandad doesn't fit the target market whatsoever, therefore it would be interesting as to what he has to say, also it enables me for future reference if i could have made my target market wider and broader. As he says he is an old man and the fast pace editing and rotating he couldn't keep up with, therefore he can't really relate to what the video is showing. He has lived his life so the ideology he has right now have been set in stone, therefore not changing due to what he consumes.

On the other end of the spectrum my friend Ismail is an 18 year old male, therefore being very relatable in terms of my target market. He is in the age of just 'testing' life and he doesn't really have morals or ideologies set in stone like my grandad did, he's in an experimental period. Allowing him to be more open minded and understanding of what his current situations are as he is planning on going to University in the autumn, therefore the university fees can be relatable to the ideologies and connotations of greed and control. It also helped that Ismail is a fan of this genre, as he understands that this genre is not meant to be prim and perfect, there are allowed to be rough edges reflecting this experimental period Ismail is currently in.

Ancillary Text Feedback

I also gained feedback about my ancillary texts from my friend Zack, who is also in the same boat as Ismail going through this experimental stage, as he is going to University as well. His mind is still as open as anything, no morals or ideologies are set in stone, allowing Zack to be open to interpretation. By doing this i realised a common semantic field about my ancillary texts had positive lexical connotations, but it was the use of the vivid red colours that was actually eye catching, but to me i thought i could have used more in terms of my video. But the house style and motif that was seen throughout all 3 of my products made them look professional and conventional, therefore making them more likely to be consumed by fans of the rock genre if they see something similar with a fresh burst. Possibly i could have brightened my media texts up making it more eye catching, but the connotations i wanted are through the use of dark colours remaining throughout all 3 texts.

Conclusion

In conclusion i realised how significant it is to conduct audience feedback, because how else are you going to realise what needs improving or remaining the same. Everyone's ideologies and interpretations are different, therefore allowing me to improve my product and widen the target market allowing the artist to gain more consumers and becoming a success.
